Welcome to EVGA 2025

The European VLBI Group for Geodesy and Astrometry (EVGA) is a network of European scientists dedicated to advancing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) for geodetic and astrometric purposes. As part of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS), EVGA’s mission includes fostering the use of European VLBI resources to derive high-quality reference frames and scientific results, connecting various VLBI components from observations to data analysis, and promoting European geodetic and astrometric VLBI in the international scientific community.

Matera, a brief overview

Matera, located in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with history dating back to prehistoric times. It is famously known for its Sassi, ancient cave dwellings carved into the limestone rock, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city’s unique landscape, featuring a labyrinth of cave houses, churches, and underground structures, offers a glimpse into its past while showcasing the evolution of human settlement.

In recent years, Matera has undergone significant restoration and revitalization, transforming into a vibrant cultural hub. It was named the European Capital of Culture in 2019, a title that highlights its historical and cultural significance. The city offers a mix of ancient history and modern attractions, making it a fascinating destination for visitors interested in archaeology, architecture, and Italian culture.

Palazzo Viceconte

Palazzo Viceconte is an elegant historical palace located in the heart of Matera’s ancient district, the Sassi. This refined venue combines the charm of 17th-century architecture with modern amenities, making it an ideal location for conferences, cultural events, and ceremonies. The palace offers panoramic views of the ancient cityscape, including the Sassi, which enhance the experience of any event hosted there.

The interiors of Palazzo Viceconte are characterized by classical furnishings, frescoed ceilings, and beautifully restored rooms, which provide a sophisticated and authentic Italian atmosphere. The venue is not only a hub for events but also a symbol of Matera’s historical heritage, combining the city’s cultural richness with modern functionality.
